Chapter 42

“What do you want this email to Henry to say?” Marco asks, sitting down in front of one of the many computers humming away on every surface in his office.

“How about, Lincoln Bramston’s death is linked to his daughter’s disappearance. You need to look at his business partners.”

Marco turns back to the screen, his fingers flying over the keyboard. “Are you sure about this before I send it? He’ll likely show it to the police.”

“I don’t have any better ideas. I need to do something to take the heat off me and Callie.”

Marco slumps back in his chair and rubs his hands over his face.

“I’m sorry for dragging you into this,” I say. “But you said you wanted to help.”

He grunts. “Not this kind of help. I wanted to hire you a good lawyer. You’re skating on thin ice, Piper. I can make this email untraceable, but it’s like throwing a cup of water on a raging wildfire. It won’t deter the cops. They’ll talk to Lincoln’s business partners, and look into his affairs, and when they find nothing that links his daughter’s disappearance to his death, the spotlight will be back on the last two people to see him alive — his wife and her sister.”

“You don’t know that. They might find some dirt on Lincoln when they pull back the curtains. Wealth and corruption go hand in hand.”

Marco rubs his jaw. “You watch too many movies. Theo Bramston comes from a long line of money. Whatever questionable business his grandfather might have been involved in, it was a long time ago. Theo inherited the family fortune and added to it. Lincoln was more interested in exploiting the lifestyle than contributing much of anything to it.”

“How do you know all this?”

Marco gestures to the computers with a sweep of his arm. “All the information in the world is there for the taking if you know how to get your hands on it.”

I furrow my brow. “Should I send Eleanor and Theo a ransom demand for their granddaughter instead?”

Marco’s expression darkens. “Like I said, leave the kid out of it.”

“And like I said, invoking her name might help find her. The police haven’t made any progress. They’re obviously not making her a priority. We could actually do some good if we found her in the process.”

Marco runs a hand over his thinning hair. “I don’t like that idea any better. A ransom demand will trigger a higher-priority investigation. We’re talking FBI.”

I get to my feet and pace the room. I might open us up to more scrutiny than I bargained for if the FBI get involved. Henry’s a snake and Altman has plenty of experience, but neither of them have anything like the resources the Feds have at their disposal.

“All right,” I say. “Stick with the anonymous tip for now.”

Marco turns his attention back to the screen. A short time later, he gets to his feet and stretches. “It’s done. Want something to drink?”

“Just some water, thanks.”

I follow him into the kitchen and take a seat at the table.
